Laurin Buchanan, Principal Investigator at Secure Decisions, will be speaking on two different topics during the NICE 2019 Conference and Expo in Phoenix, Arizona. The annual NICE (National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education) Conference and Expo brings together thought leaders from industry, academia, governments, and non-profits to share best practices in cybersecurity education from across the world and across sectors. The theme of this year’s NICE conference is “Reimagining the Future of the Cybersecurity Workforce: Adapting to a Changing Landscape”.
Ms. Buchanan will deliver a presentation entitled Beyond Dilbert, xkcd, and Little Bobby: Teaching Cybersecurity with Comics at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 11/19, as part of the “Expanding Skill Development through Lifelong Learning” conference track. Ms. Buchanan will discuss how comics can engage learners of any age or experience level with critical foundational concepts and technical skills. Novel educational approaches using comics will be presented, including interactive, branching comics that allow readers to make decisions and see the outcomes of their choices—good and bad.
Ms. Buchanan will also present Evolving Cyber Defense through Automation and AI at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday 11/20, exploring how rapidly advancing technologies are changing both the data processed by cyber defense analysts, and the nature of their tasks. Part of “The Impacts of Future Technologies on the Cybersecurity Workforce” conference track, this session will share observations from recent human factors research and provide insight as to how these changes could actually increase the gap between new recruits and experienced cyber defense analysts, and highlight implications for other work roles in the NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework.
The conference is supported by NICE, a program of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) within the US Department of Commerce. NICE seeks to improve the current state of cybersecurity education, both for the current workforce and generations in the future. The NICE Conference and Expo will take place from November 18-20, 2019, in Phoenix, Arizona.
