NORTHPORT, NY, December 13th, 2011– Dr. Anita D’Amico,  an information security and visualization specialist, Director of the Secure Decisions Division of Applied Visions Inc., was invited to participate in DARPA’s first  Cyber Colloquium on November 7th, 2011. The DARPA Cyber Colloquium will investigate future techniques and technologies for securing the Nation’s cyber infrastructure and assuring the Department of Defense’s cyber capabilities.

The colloquium included a keynote by the DARPA director, presentations by industry and government leaders, and discussions with DARPA program managers on current and future cyber research directions.  Members of the cyber community from academia, industry, and government, were selected based on their written response to three questions posed by DARPA:

  • At present, attackers in cyberspace seem to have the initiative and hence the advantage. What specific technologies should DARPA develop to address the imbalance?
  • Attacks on embedded computing systems have received much attention. What specific technologies should DARPA develop to secure embedded computing systems?
  • If DARPA could only invest in one cyber-security research area, what should that be and why?

As Director of Secure Decisions, Dr. D’Amico has led the company’s innovative research and product development in security visualization. She has been dedicated to improving the performance of cyber defenders through visualization, applying over 20 years of R&D experience and expertise as a human factors psychologist and an information security specialist. Dr. D’Amico has published dozens of papers on security visualization, and holds a patent in the field. Prior to joining Applied Visions, Dr. D’Amico was founder and head of the Information Warfare team at Northrop Grumman, where she led the effort to develop a system for forecasting cyber attacks on military networks. Dr. D’Amico holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Psychology from Adelphi University with a focus on Human Factors and Cognitive Psychology.
